Back to a little coffee talk…

Arabica and Robusta are two of the many species of coffee plant and the most important in the world of commercial coffee.

Coffea Arabica is descended from the original Ethiopian lines of coffee. It is ground around the Equatorial Belt (The Bean Belt!). Arabica coffees are about 60-70% of the world’s production. They are a more expensive bean because it can be more difficult to cultivate and harvest. The plants prefer higher altitudes and on slopes. They are more prone to disease and pests than Robusta.

Coffea Canephora var. Robusta is grown in a variety of countries. It has more caffeine than Arabica and therefore more resistant to disease and pests. It can also be grown at lower altitudes. It is used in commercial and institutional coffee, think schools, prisons and military bases. It is also used for instant coffee.

While Robusta does pack a punch and is easier to grow the flavor difference is significant. Hence, the reason that most small roasters, like us, choose Arabica beans. So, brew yourself a cup or come by a Front Porch and savor that wonderful flavor An Arabica bean gives us.
