How to Brew Coffee in a French Press

Front Porch Cafe OBX Bru Trek Standard Size French Press and a Front Porch Cafe Outer Banks bag of Nicaraguan coffee

The French press is one of the simplest - and most rewarding - ways to brew coffee.

With just a press, hot water, and your favorite beans, you can create a rich, full-bodied cup in under five minutes. Perfect for home, the office, the beach or even while traveling.

What You’ll Need

Front Porch Cafe BRU TREK French Press (32 fl oz) or any Standard Size French Press

2.1 oz (60 g / about 10–12 tbsp) coarsely ground coffee

32 fl oz (900 g / 4 cups) hot water (195–200°F / 90–93°C)

Grind the Coffee or Let us Grind it For You

2.1 oz (60 g) of coffee beans ground to a coarse texture - like kosher salt. Fine grinds can clog the filter and make the coffee bitter and muddy.

Heat the Water

Heat your water to just below boiling - 195–200°F (90–93°C). If you don’t have a thermometer, let boiling water sit for 30 seconds before using.

Prime the Press (Optional)

Pour a little hot water into the empty French pressswirl, and discard. This warms the container and helps maintain brewing temperature.

Add Coffee & Pour Water

Add your ground coffee to the French press. Gently tap the press on the counter to level the grounds.

Start pouring hot water in a slow spiral, making sure all grounds are evenly saturated

Stir & Steep

After the first pour, stir gently with a wooden spoon or stick to break up the bloom (the coffee will puff up as it releases CO₂).

Place the lid on the press with the plunger pulled all the way up. Let it steep for 4 minutes.

Press & Pour

When the timer goes off, slowly press the plunger down with steady pressure until it reaches the bottom.
